چکیده

General Aviation (GA) accident statistics indicate that visual flight rules (VFR) flight into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) is a major safety hazard within general aviation. Little research has been conducted to identify the factors that influence VFR pilots’ decisions to risk flying into deteriorating weather. As accident reports provide a naturalistic source of such information, this paper presents an analysis of 409 GA aircraft accidents involving VFR flight into IMC that occurred between 1990 and 1997. Fatality rates, pilot demographics and accident causefactors are highlighted and compared to other GA aircraft accidents. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Pilots’ Decisions to Continue Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Flight into Adverse Weather: Effects of Distance Traveled and Flight Experience

Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flight into Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) is a major safety hazard within general aviation. In this study, pilots' decisions to continue or divert from a VFR flight into IMC during a dynamic simulation of a crosscountry flight were examined. Pilots encountered IFR conditions either early or later into the flight and the amount of time and distance pilots f...

Effects of Advanced Cockpit Displays on General Aviation Pilots’ Decisions to Continue Visual Flight Rules Flight into Instrument Meteorological Conditions

Thirty pilots flew a simulated VFR cross country flight into deteriorating weather with one of three levels of display support: a control display with standard instruments, a synthetic vision system (SVS) display depicting terrain and a highway in the sky (HITS), and a configuration in which the same SVS HITS display was augmented by an electronic moving map depicting weather. Results revealed ...

Investigating Pilot Performance Using Mixed-Modality Simulated Data Link

OBJECTIVE General aviation (GA) pilot performance utilizing a mixed-modality simulated data link was objectively evaluated based on the time required in accessing, understanding, and executing data link commands. Additional subjective data were gathered on workload, situation awareness (SA), and preference. BACKGROUND Research exploring mixed-modality data link integration to the single-pilot...
